What is Grok 4? A Smarter, Friendlier AI

Grok 4 is xAI’s newest AI model, built to help people tackle complex challenges, from writing code to answering deep scientific questions. Unlike its predecessors, it comes in two versions: Grok 4, perfect for everyday tasks, and Grok 4 Heavy, which uses a team of AI agents to solve trickier problems—like a virtual brainstorming session. Launched with a buzz on platforms like X, where users celebrated its arrival (@xai, @btibor91), Grok 4 is powered by xAI’s massive Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, packing over 200,000 GPUs for lightning-fast performance.

Imagine Grok 4 as an exceptionally intelligent assistant that’s always standing by, ready to assist you, whether you’re working through a code bug, researching a subject, or investigating large ideas. It’s intended to reason clearly, eschew fluff, and provide you with results that you can rely on. Let’s analyze what it’s capable of and how it differentiates itself in a crowded AI market.

Grok 4 is packed with practical features that make it a standout for 2025. Here’s what you get:

Next-Level Problem-Solving: Grok 4 is a whiz at handling tough questions, from math to science. It scored an impressive 25.4% on Humanity’s Last Exam, a test that challenges even the sharpest minds. With extra tools, Grok 4 Heavy jumps to 44.4%, making it one of the smartest AIs around.
Coding Made Easy: If you’re a developer, Grok 4 Code is your new best friend. It works right inside tools like Cursor, helping you write, fix, and improve code in real time—like having a coding pro by your side.
Handles Big Projects: With a 128,000-token capacity (~96,000 words), Grok 4 can process huge documents or complex tasks. Image analysis and creation are coming soon via xAI’s Aurora model, building on the kind of visual tech we’ve seen in DALL-E 3’s image generation.
Clear and Fair Answers: xAI revamped Grok 4 to focus on logic and facts, addressing past concerns about biased responses. It’s built to give you straightforward, reliable answers.
Developer Access: With the xAI API (model ID: grok-4-0629), developers can tap into Grok 4 for only $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens—super affordable for creating your own apps!

Grok 4’s tools are perfect whether you’re coding, running a business, or just excited to play with cutting-edge tech.

How Grok 4 Stacks Up Against Earlier Grok Models

To see why Grok 4 is such a big deal, let’s compare it to xAI’s earlier models:

#	Feature	Grok 1 (Nov 2023)	Grok 1.5 (Mar 2024)	Grok 2 (Aug 2024)	Grok 3 (Feb 2025)	Grok 4 (Jul 2025)
1	Context Window	8,000 tokens	16,000 tokens	32,000 tokens	131,000 tokens	128,000 tokens
2	Key Strength	Basic Q&A	Improved reasoning	Image creation	Deep research, coding	Multi-agent reasoning, coding
3	Benchmark (ARC-AGI-2)	Not available	Not available	Not available	8.1%	15.9% (Grok 4), 16.2% (Heavy)
4	Multimodal	Text only	Text only	Text + images	Text + images	Text (vision soon)
5	API Availability	Limited	Limited	Yes	Yes ($3–$25/M tokens)	Yes ($3–$15/M tokens)
6	Use Case	Casual chats	Better Q&A	Creative projects	Research, coding	Coding, complex tasks

Grok 1 and 1.5: These were xAI’s first steps—great for simple chats but limited in scope. They laid the groundwork but couldn’t handle big projects.
Grok 2: Added image creation with Flux, making it fun for creative tasks, but it wasn’t as strong at deep reasoning.
Grok 3: A huge jump with a massive context window and DeepSearch for web research, excelling in math and science. It set the stage for Grok 4.
Grok 4: The latest model shines in reasoning and coding, with Grok 4 Heavy introducing teamwork-style problem-solving. It’s slightly smaller in the context window than Grok 3 but faster and more practical.

Grok 4 takes the best of its predecessors and adds smarter tools, making it a top choice for anyone looking to get real work done with AI.

Grok 4 vs. Other Big AI Models

Grok 4 is stepping into a competitive ring with giants like OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro, Anthropic’s Claude 3.7, and DeepSeek’s R1. Here’s how it compares:

#	Feature	Grok 4	GPT-4o	Gemini 2.5 Pro	Claude 3.7	DeepSeek R1
1	Strengths	Problem-solving, coding, fairness	All-around versatility, wide use	Fast search, huge context	Safety, ethical focus	Affordable, coding-focused
2	Benchmark (Humanity’s Last Exam)	25.4% (44.4% with tools)	~21% (est.)	21.6%	Not disclosed	Not disclosed
3	Context Window	128,000 tokens	128,000 tokens	1,000,000 tokens	200,000 tokens	128,000 tokens
4	API Pricing	$3–$15 / M tokens	$2.5–$10 / M tokens	$0.5–$2 / M tokens	$3–$15 / M tokens	Not disclosed
5	Unique Feature	Multi-agent reasoning	Strong image processing	Massive context window	Safety-first design	Budget-friendly coding

GPT-4o: Powers ChatGPT and handles text, images, and more. Grok 4 stands out with its coding tools and focus on clear, unbiased answers.
Gemini 2.5 Pro: Google’s AI is fast and search-focused, with a huge context window, but it’s less tailored for coding than Grok 4.
Claude 3.7: Anthropic’s model prioritizes safety, making it great for cautious users, but it lacks Grok 4’s coding focus and multi-agent teamwork.
DeepSeek R1: A cost-effective coding AI, but it’s less versatile and has limited global reach compared to Grok 4.

Grok 4’s strength lies in its coding tools and logical thinking, making it a favorite for developers and problem-solvers, while its fair approach to answers appeals to anyone seeking reliable info.

Clearing Up Past Concerns: A Trustworthy AI

Earlier Grok models, like Grok 3, sometimes gave answers that raised eyebrows, especially on sensitive topics. xAI listened and retooled Grok 4 to focus on facts and logic, using cleaner data and transparent updates (check out their GitHub for proof). This openness sets Grok 4 apart from competitors like OpenAI, who keep their processes under wraps. Users on X have praised this shift, noting Grok 4’s clarity and reliability, making it a go-to for those who want answers they can count on.

How to Start Using Grok 4 Today

Grok 4 is designed to be accessible, no matter who you are:

grok.com: Try it free with a limited quota, or go for SuperGrok Heavy ($300/month) for extra power. Visit x.ai/grok for details.
X Platform: Free for everyone, with premium accounts ($50/month) offering higher limits. Check help.x.com for more.
Grok Mobile Apps: Available on iOS and Android with free access and voice mode (only on apps). Image features are on the way.
xAI API: Developers can tap into Grok 4 for $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, ideal for custom apps.

This wide access makes Grok 4 more approachable than some competitors, like Claude, which lacks mobile apps, and matches the reach of GPT-4o. Whether you’re on your phone or coding a project, Grok 4 is ready to help.

What Grok 4 Means for You

Grok 4 is built to fit into your world, no matter your goals:
