What is Bifrost?
Bifrost is an open-source AI gateway from Maxim AI for teams building applications with language models, agents, and MCP tools. It provides a unified API for accessing models from multiple providers, with routing, monitoring, and controls for managing usage. Developers can connect it to existing AI SDKs by changing the base URL, while enterprise teams can add deployment, security, and support options for production systems.
Bifrost Features:
Unified Model API: Access more than 1,000 models from multiple providers through one API, and switch models without changing application code.
Provider Routing: Define routing rules and flows to direct requests across models and provider keys according to your setup.
Automatic Fallbacks: Configure requests to fail over between providers or models when a provider is unavailable.
MCP Gateway: Connect to MCP tool servers, execute tools, and apply centralized access policies and tool allow-lists.
Budgets and Keys: Set spending limits and rate limits across teams and virtual keys, with separate permissions and routing controls.
Request Monitoring: Inspect AI requests through a built-in dashboard, OpenTelemetry support, provider metrics, and request log exports.
Bifrost Benefits:
Simpler Model Changes: A shared API surface lets teams try another model or provider without rewriting each application’s integration.
Fewer Disruptions: Fallbacks give applications another configured provider or model to use when a request cannot be served.
Spend Visibility: Budgets and usage tracking help teams see where AI costs accrue and set limits before spending grows unchecked.
Centralized Controls: Virtual keys and policies make it easier to manage who can use models and tools across teams.
Faster Troubleshooting: Request traces, metrics, and logs give developers information to investigate failures and performance issues.
Use Cases:
Multi-Model Applications: Route requests from a product using several language-model providers through one integration point.
Agent Tool Access: Connect an AI agent to MCP tools while managing which tools are available to each virtual key.
Team Cost Controls: Set separate budgets and rate limits for teams, projects, or customers that share AI infrastructure.
Production Reliability: Configure provider and model fallbacks for applications that need an alternative when an upstream service fails.
Private Deployments: Run the gateway in a private cloud environment or an air-gapped, on-premises, or hybrid setup.
